And because I'm also very good at jumping from topic to topic, I'm onto birthdays and sandals. My birthday is in May. I love my birthday. I'm kind of feeling at this point, like I might actually love my birthday for the rest of my life. Because so far, I haven't started liking it less because I was getting older. I also have an affliction for giving presents away too early, which I totally inherited from my mom! (The only cure for this affliction is buying everything at the LAST MINUTE. Otherwise, you end up buying more than one present. The one you gave too early and the one you bought last minute for the event. Not very green, or good on the wallet.) So, since my birthday is next month and my mom already received my birthday present from the good ole postman, I got my birthday present early! YEAH!! And, can you guess what they are? Did you guess sandals? You're right. But, let me tell you a bit about my awesome new sandals. Because they're like the coolest sandals EVER (and not just cause they're from my mama <3)!
Those aren't my feet. I stole this picture from Sseko Designs in an effort to show you how awesome these sandals are! Now, besides being really cool looking sandals (and REALLY comforable), they're socially responsible. I'm going to let them tell you what that means. In their own words:
How cool is that? You should definitely go and read more about them here. And you should probably buy some. (I'm not being paid to say that. I really think it!) Because these sandals are like an endless number of pairs of sandals. The straps are interchangable! So, while I have the teal sandals above, I also have the sprig sandals below.Sseko Designs is a not-just-for-profit enterprise that recognizes the power of business and responsible consumerism to support sustainable economic development, which in turn affects a country's educational, justice, and health care systems. The goal of Sseko Designs is two-fold: provide university tuition for these promising young women through a sustainable monthly income, while also contributing to the overall economic development of Uganda.
I'm going to make a bunch of straps myself too! I'm thinking of trying some with ruffles too - wouldn't that be fun!?! I might need to move some place warmer too, so I can wear my Sseko's every day! Check them out - I think you'd love them too :)

PS- I didn't pay for my Sseko's, but my mama did :) So, this isn't a paid endorsement/review, just a post about an awesome birthday present, an awesome mama, and an awesome company.

okay, wait, let me get this: you can make the straps, as many as you want, out of any fabric? What about leather? They just weave through the holes? And are they really comfy? Could they be dressed up?
Ann, I don't know if you can use any fabric you want. The ones that came with it seem to be just a basic cotton. I'm planning to make some with home dec weight fabrics from my stash and some recycled t-shirts. I think the t-shirt ones will be really comfy, but will stretch throughout the day. I think you could use leather too, as long as it wasn't too thick or too stiff to fit through the elastic pieces you thread through. They are SUPER comfy! I've been wearing them everyday and I LOVE them!! I think they could be dressed up to a certain degree. We were brainstorming at work how you could add some beads or something to the straps, but haven't come up with anything definitive yet. I'll post once I get a pedicure and a few strap sets done - LOL!
LOVE those sandals -
C-U-T-E!!!!!...Happy early b'day!
