Going Green: (Almost) Paperless

I recently read this post on Simple Mom that has steps to create a paperless kitchen.  I felt pretty good when I read it, because we already have a paperless kitchen.  We haven't gone totally paperless in our house, but we don't buy or use paper towel anymore. It seemed like it would be an impossible feat and I could never talk my husband into trying it. But, I stopped buying paper towel (I do all of our shopping, so I didn't really give him a choice) and it worked. We started this a few months ago and we haven't bought paper towel yet! Before I made the final step to going without paper towel, I made sure we had a BUNCH of different sized, different fabric rags ready to go. We have used old clothes, sheets, towels, etc. that were stained and/or ripped and not fit for Goodwill. We've accumulated these over several years, but we keep a big box of them in the cabinet in the kitchen, so they're handy to get at and no one can complain that paper towels are really missed. We already had some microfiber cloths and those are one of my favorite to use (even if I hate the way they make my hands feel - need a parrafin treatment anyone?).

My next goal (though it might sound a bit yucky to some) is to start using handkerchiefs. I have a bunch of vintage ones that belonged to my great grandma and they inspired me to try it. Though I would never dare use hers, I think I could make my own version that are pretty, nicer to my nose and the environment than paper and still easy on the wallet :)

What about you? Do you use paper towel? Facial Tissue?

I use facial tissues but not paper towels. We have paper towels somewhere though.. I think. I see them every now and then when the hubby uses them I guess. I prefer cloth towels when I'm working in the kitchen.

I use so few paper towels that a roll will last me months. As far as the hankies..I have been contemplating using them and think I will take the leap.

Yikes ... I fail at this one. I'm a paper towel addict. However, we live in Germany and we do some SERIOUS recycling. We only produce 1 bag of trash per week ... and we still have a toddler in diapers. We have "bio" trash here and all food scraps, paper towels, tissues and such are recycled as biodegradable.

Kitchen sponges and rags are horrible hosts for germs. They need to be microwaved for 2 minutes on high at least once a day in order to be sanitary according to the FDA.

Jamie-Wow! I wish Michigan had what Germany has! We only produce one bag of trash a week with 1 in diapers and 1 potty trained 2 year old. (Family of 4) But I bet I could get it down A LOT more if we had something like this for "bio" trash...
Jennie- I was thinking about this when I read it as well...I use one wash cloth a day for this reason :) Just easier when I do one load every other day...
Heather- I am thinking about doing a clothesline this summer...now that we have the space. We are not paperless but I am going to attempt this since we are almost out now anyway ;)

I do microwave my sponges, but I only use the cloth rags for a day (sometimes less) so I don't worry so much about them...

I love the idea of a clothesline too, but my hubby does much more of the laundry (I only fold and put away) and he hates clotheslines. So, I have to give in on this one or add another task to my list :(
